What is a Tournologist?
Here at Tournology, we like to say that tournaments are our specialty. We like reading rulebooks, statistics, and empirical data on the results from tournaments to analyze the effectiveness of a tournament structure. Establishing the rules and structure of a tournament is one of the most important steps of the planning process, and it can decide whether or not that tournament will be a rousing success or an utter failure.
At the end of your tournament, it will be judged on one factor alone: Were the participants satisfied? Of course, we’re not just talking about the winners. We’ve witnessed tournaments where the competitors were so lopsided in skill, that the winners got tired of winning so easily, and the losers of losing so badly. That makes for unsatisfied participants.
- A Tournologist values good competition above all things. At the end of every match, we want each team, winners and losers, to say “Wow, that was one heck of a game.”
- A Tournologist values respect for opponents. Don’t undervalue the fact that a match with equally skilled opponents will inspire and push the boundaries for each team’s improvement.
- A Tournologist values fair play. The rules must be clearly established to prevent misleading interpretations. Judgment calls must err on the side of fairness.
